John's Island, South Carolina
808 acres

Award Winning Master Plan

Named for the creek that connects this John's Island property to the Kiawah River, Briar's Creek blends into its surroundings by embracing the history and natural beauty of the land. DesignWorks was challenged to preserve this pristine setting in a master plan that included a golf course, residential area and preserve.

In conjunction with Rees Jones, DesignWorks planned a golf course that preserved woodlands and minimized the destruction of grand trees by using existing open spaces.

While the golf course maximizes the use of open spaces, DesignWorks located residential areas deep within the woodlands and used only 25 percent of the property zoned for homes. Lots range from one to seven acres to ensure a low density community and fit within the rural context. Development restrictions protect the majority of natural vegetation on each lot, keeping this community consistent with the rural John's Island character.

To balance development at Briar's Creek, the master plan preserves a large portion of the land including farmland, woodlands, marshes, wetlands, and the river's edge. Because of the magnificent landscape saved by this plan, the Briar's Creek development maintains the rural tradition long harbored by John's Island and remains virtually invisible from nearby waterways.
