Beresford Creek Golf Course
at The Daniel Island Club
Daniel Island, South Carolina
Master Plan for Layout of Golf Course
The Daniel Island Golf Course is an integral part of the development of Daniel Island. Located on the Wando and Cooper Rivers near the historical Charleston peninsula, the development of Daniel Island brings a new opportunity of traditional planning and island living to the area. In conjunction with The Daniel Island Company, EDSA, Inc., and Thomas and Hutton Engineering, DesignWorks was commissioned to assist in the routing of a Tom Fazio signature golf course and its attendant landscape.
The design process initially began as a three-day charette involving the design consultants. The exact placement of the course was chosen to best utilize the existing land conditions: preserving large existing trees, providing dramatic views of marshes and wetlands, and to maximize home site potential. To achieve this, DesignWorks collaborated closely with Fazio Golf Course Designers, Inc., and decided upon creating a park-like setting, incorporating the style and principles of famed landscape architect, Fredrick Law Olmsted. The addition of large hand-selected trees, the transplanting of native, pasture grasses from the northern end of the island, and the incorporation of aquatics created a more established, pastoral and natural atmosphere.
DesignWorks is also proud to announce the Beresford Creek Golf Course at The Daniel Island Club as a 2003 winner of the National Arbor Day Society’s Award of Excellence for the care, protection and preservation of significant existing trees.
Completion: 2000
