Artist noun: One who is able, by virtue of imagination and talent or skill, to create works of aesthetic value, especially in the fine arts.

For a tiny metropolis, Charleston is blessed with a riot of artists. From A to Z, they represent every media of visual art, whether it's a bottle cap mosaic, a sculpture of a man-beast, a spray-painted building, or a classic still life. Charleston's artists keep busy working, mostly because few have much choice. Some have attained a measure of success and live well, others are embroiled in the daily passion of creating their art and live hand to mouth. But all of them rely on the dialogue between artist and viewer. They create, and then they put their work out there to be viewed, admired, reviled, and consumed, for good or bad. This photo essay captures just a sampling of local artists; many more are out there working with their brains and their hands and their hearts, and to them we dedicate this issue...
