Ogeechee Golf Clubhouse
Richmond Hill, Georgia
Landscape Architecture
The Ford Plantation Golf Club is located at the heart of Henry Ford's former property. This magnificent and highly-sensitive property posesses environmental and historic marvels within its grounds: Composed of three 18th century rice plantations, it still has three 200-year-old oak alleys, dikes and marshlands filled with wildlife and vegetation. In keeping with its history, the new clubhouse was build at the end of an existing oak alley where a plantation once stood.
DesignWorks mission was multiple:
First, to help the architect locate the three buildings that compose the clubhouse complex. A bluff was built to allow the front of the clubhouse to sit at grade at the end of the alley while providing adequate views from the back of the clubhouse toward the golf, river, lake and marshlands. Parking for golf carts and utilities were hidden under the building anchored in the bluff.
Second, to provide access and parking to the club without damaging the pristine historic oak alley. Laborious arborist work was done before and after the construction, the loop road and parking were designed with pervious materials to minimize impact on the trees. Special sub-grade and soil were brought in to insure perfect growth for the trees
The overall design of the clubhouse is simple in keeping with most historic southern plantations. It respects the historic alley and setting while integrating the modern necessities proper to a modern golf clubhouse
