College of Charleston Students in line for graduation

Cougar Square, The College of Charleston
Charleston, South Carolina

Site Plan

The College of Charleston presented DesignWorks with an opportunity to reclaim an under-utilized area on its campus in the heart of downtown Charleston. The challenge was to transform a walk-through space between two buildings into a destination point where students could comfortably congregate in between classes.

Located just off of the main thoroughfare through downtown, Cougar Plaza has become an active open space on campus and has allowed the college to showcase its mascot to all those visiting the area. A large median filled with shrubs and trees and dividing the space was removed and replaced with benches to allow for more movement with the ever-growing enrollment at the college. Students have adopted the space as their own and consistently use the space for school activities
