Master Plan for a Decomissioned
Army Base
Located in Anniston, Alabama, Fort McClellan is a decommissioned US Army Training Base. DesignWorks, LC was hired to develop a land use plan for the 25,000 acres. The land use plan is comprised of a number of different uses including Industrial, Technology, Retail, Commercial, Office, Research, Wildlife Reserve, Recreation/Park System, and Residential land uses. Second in size to the Park System are the residential land uses. Using the new Land Use Plan, DesignWorks, LC has designed the first of a number of different residential areas designated by the land use plan.
The new Mount Royal Residential Neighborhood is this first residential neighborhood to be designed within the new ‘McClellan’. Located adjacent to the Yahoo Performing Arts Center, the Anniston Sports Center and the Auburn Park, this neighborhood is sited predominately on steeper terrain. The district will be primarily single family lots from one to five acres with higher density along the edge of the Anniston Sports Center. While the first phase of the neighborhood will primarily be residential, it will also include schools, appropriately designed and located churches, recreation
facilities and neighborhood parks. The plan responds to the topography, existing natural vegetation and drainage patterns. Trees will be preserved to the greatest extent possible, as they are one of McClellan’s greatest assets. |
