Kiawah Island Parkway Revitalization
Kiawah Island, South Carolina
Site Design
Kiawah Island Parkway is not only the main artery of this barrier island community, it is an integral part of the visitor’s experience of a premier resort, reflecting its natural beauty, and the understated elegance that characterizes the Kiawah style.
The Landscape Revitalization project encompasses approximately 6 miles of the Parkway, stretching from the main entrance gate to the intersection of Flyway and Governor’s Drives. A palette of mainly indigenous plants was chosen to blend with the existing vegetation. Native grasses, and ferns lent fresh, airy notes, while low growing saw palms, yuccas and needle palms punctuated the planting with strong textural accents. Careful attention was given to supplementing the natural tree and shrub layers with species that would mature to contribute to the maritime forest canopy. A rich emerald ribbon of sod undulates along the interface between vegetation and roadway, framing the exuberance of the plantings, and marking the transition to identifiable human influence. |
