Residential Design
Charleston, South Carolina
Huguenot Court, in the Historic District of Charleston, SC, is a grouping of brick homes built around 1742 on land owned by the Huguenot Church. The homeowners purchased a small undeveloped lot within the complex to build an efficient and elegant house and garden using recycled brick from a nearby demolition site. With exterior space severely limited, every square inch had to be carefully planned for functionality and aesthetic impact. The intent was to relate the house and garden contextually to the historic area, while maximizing the utility and beauty of a small space to serve the individual needs of a busy modern family.
The particular challenge of this project was to provide for the many client uses in a small space, while maintaining a sense of continuity. By using subtle changes in grade, careful placement of paths & steps, and specific separation plantings, several garden rooms were conceived: a transition space from car to garden, a formal entry, a private seating area, an informal eating area, a garden walk, and a reflective nook. Old stone excavated during the construction of the house was set aside and used as benches and paving materials during landscape installation. The home site shows cultural and environmental sensitivity in a highly urban setting. |
