Residential Design
Kiawah Island, South Carolina
This residence is constructed on steep sided former dunes at the marsh edge. The main house is situated on the lower part of the site, while the pool and pool house are approximately 10’ higher, on a tree-covered knoll.
Sinuous retaining walls were constructed to handle the grade change, and, with the addition of berming along the street frontage conceal the entire entry area from view.
Predominantly native plants were used, with an emphasis on species particularly adapted to the site. Cordgrass and Sweetgrass stabilized the slope to the marsh, while small oaks, selected for their ‘gnarled’ appearance were clustered with palms on the exposed dune top. |
