Site Design

The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island is a luxury oceanfront resort set in a lush natural surrounding. DesignWorks was challenged to create a casual and natural setting combining the feel of the well-appointed hotel with the surrounding maritime forest. The world's largest mechanical spade was used to relocate, rather than remove, over 150 endangered oak trees and 200 palmetto trees from the existing seven acre site. Over a three-year design and construction process, each tree was carefully directed and placed to replicate the natural maritime forest.
