Sullivan's Island Garden
Sullivan's Island, South Carolina

Residential Master Plan

This residence on Sullivan’s Island was renovated to provide an ideal place for family gatherings. The house has an understated, comfortable feel with the appearance of a typical beach house added-to over time. The landscaping is simple, informal, and elegant, focused on creating useful space which includes a swimming pool, a horseshoe pit, a play structure, an outdoor living room, and a generous parking area.

Two distinct entrances were designed for the house, one for vehicles and a second pedestrian entrance from the back street to the outdoor living space. A picket fence and hedge ensure privacy from the back street while the ‘doorway’ offers an inviting look toward the house and pool.

Pervious concrete was used in the parking area to decrease the amount of impervious surface on the property. Belgian block and brick detailing add a stylish touch to the grey concrete.

The pool is of a generous size to allow for play and lap swimming. Attention to details makes it an aesthetic asset, designed to be viewed from the house porches one story above. A dark grey finish gives the pool a more natural look, and the water beautifully reflects the sky. The use of cast stone and brick tie the pool and deck together. The paved surface continues under the house to create a convenient shaded outdoor room, without adding to the amount of impervious surface.
