Residential Pool Design

The challenge for this project was to design a swimming pool and deck that fit appropriately into an established yard. The pool and deck needed to be complementary to the existing home and provide adequate hard surface for entertaining while maximizing the grassed play area for the children.

The pool was located close to the house, allowing the deck to extend the existing patio and leaving room for an open grassy area sloping down to an adjacent pond. The house consists of an original traditional brick structure with a contemporary addition featuring monolithic concrete columns. Hand cast brick, similar to what was used for the house, was used for the deck material. A distinct white limestone was selected for the pool coping and deck banding to reflect the look of the concrete columns. The result ties in well with both the newer and the older architecture.

In order to achieve privacy while swimming, but allowing an open view to the pond, a low brick wall with a sheet flow fountain was constructed at the end of the pool. The wall is backed by a podocarpus hedge which can be pruned to the desired height. The darker color of the pool finish matches well with the adjacent pond and reflects the sky beautifully.
