Marsh-side Residence
Kiawah Island, South Carolina

This residence is reached by a winding drive through shady woodland, planted with ferns and dwarf palms. This simple, naturalistic theme is extended around the outer edges of the property, shifting to salt tolerant species and marshland grasses at the rear of the house, where the dock runs out to the Kiawah River.

Another, quite distinct garden area is formed by the unusual layout of the house, which is split into two separate buildings. The space between the buildings required a clean, sophisticated look to compliment the striking architecture. A bluestone terrace wraps around the lap pool, while bands of rounded river stone in the same shade of gray provide an interesting textural contrast. Flowing plants and vines add richness and life to the space.
